Working on meaningful technology
Bram joined us in 2015 in Son, which was then called Demcon South and consisted of only a small team. Around that time a new project for a respiratory system was about to start, which required us to go from an empty piece of paper all the way to realization and even production. Bram was given the opportunity to become responsible for the technical part. Nowadays, this system is still in production and used in a lot of respiratory systems across the world.
This experience brought him into a role he hadn’t initially envisioned, but one that suited him well. The diversity and impact of the projects remain key reasons for Bram to work at Demcon. “The projects I work on have a real impact on people and their treatment. For example, the respiratory system I worked on evolved into a medical device now used in hospitals around the world to ventilate critically ill patients. Contributing to these kinds of innovations is what drives me.”
More recently, Bram contributed to a project with NVision, focused on helping doctors better assess the effectiveness of cancer treatments by enhancing MRI signals. This type of work combines multiple disciplines, from pneumatics to magnetics and chemistry, and enables him to contribute to solutions that truly make a difference.
More than just diversity in projects
Throughout his time at Demcon, Bram has not only valued the variety of projects but also the freedom to take on initiatives beyond his day-to-day work. He used that freedom to strengthen collaboration with universities. By helping set up PhD research, contributing as a co-promotor, and actively participating in competence groups, Bram has helped build closer ties with knowledge institutes and students. This collaboration has helped us to stay connected to the latest developments of the scientific world while also allowing us to continue to expand our own expertise.
Experiencing a different environment
After many years at Demcon, Bram grew curious about opportunities beyond the company. He decided to step outside and joined another organization focused on developing its own products, taking on a comparable role. While the experience was valuable, he discovered that the type of environment was not the perfect match, and it gave him a clearer perspective on what makes Demcon unique: “Every day at Demcon can be different. The wide variety of projects means you never quite know what the next day will bring. That diversity in challenges and project types is what keeps the work engaging.”
When he returned to Demcon, he rejoined different projects closer to his high-tech background, including inter-satellite laser communication for FSO and concept development for a new lithography machine. Going full circle, and returning to Demcon for the projects, freedom, culture and diversity he had grown used to.
